How to Calculate EV Charging Cost

To calculate EV charging cost, you need the battery size, start charge, target charge, electricity price and charging efficiency.

Formula:

Battery Size × Charge Added ÷ Charging Efficiency × Price Per kWh = Charging Cost

EV Charging Cost Example

If your EV has a 75kWh battery and you charge from 20% to 80%:

• 80% - 20% = 60% charge added
• 75kWh × 60% = 45kWh added to the battery
• 45kWh ÷ 90% efficiency = 50kWh from the charger
• 50kWh × £0.28 = £14.00

So, charging from 20% to 80% costs approximately £14.00 at 28p per kWh.

What Is kWh?

kWh stands for kilowatt-hour. It is the unit used to measure electric energy. EV battery sizes and electricity prices are normally shown in kWh.

What Is Charging Efficiency?

Charging efficiency accounts for energy lost during charging. Not all energy from the charger reaches the battery, so a 90% efficiency setting gives a more realistic charging cost.
